Based on a report published in PTV News, 300 jeepneys powered by electricity will officially be released for public use this June 2018. For now, the jeeps will cover routes in Quezon City Hall, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Elliptical Road, Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay going to Paranaque's Southwest Intermodal Transport exchange, Diliman to Manila City Hall, Gate 3 of Fort Bonifacio in Taguig going to Makati's Guadalupe Market and Taguig's Bagumbayan going to Pasig.

This project is part of the modernization project of PUV or the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) which aims to give a more comfortable, safer and environmentally sustainable public transport in the Philippines. In this way, In addition, the electricity-powered PUV will also be installed with closed-circuit television cameras or CCTV, automatic fare collection system, GPS enabled, speed limiters, Wi-Fi, and even dashboard cameras.

This will replace jeepneys today that are mostly 15 years old which are not good for the environment but also requires gas or diesel to run. The new e-jeepneys will also be installed with solar panels and powered by Euro 4 Engines so it can sustain itself and gives more income to its driver.

There are no announcements yet whether the cost of fare for e-jeepneys will be lower or higher. Nevertheless, this change is a great improvement for our commuters, especially in terms of security. Now, commuters can confidently ride public utility vehicles knowing that its CCTV will record everything. And then, of course, there is the Wi-Fi which will make traffic and long travel easier to bear.

For more information about the new e-jeepneys and how jeepney drivers today can apply for a franchise, please contact Department of Transportation or DOTr directly.
